May 05 MSDN Blog PostsI noticed it has been some time since I've cross-posted anything out here on my Spaces blog.
Check out my MSDN blog where you can find several postings from the last few months.
Unfortunately, I haven't had much time to sit and blog, but there's always an intention for me to do so.
I'd like to hear from others any subject / info they'd like to hear more about, so feel free to add a comment or two and let me know.
Thanks! January 08 SharePoint Server Setup AccountsI've been asked lately what accounts I generally use for setting up SharePoint enterprise server farms. First and foremost, consult the guidance available at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc263445.aspx for your specific configuration. That being said, here is what I normally do for 5-6 server setups (WFE/APP & Index/SQL): DOMAIN\MOSSSQLSVC (SQL Service Account) There you have it.. 14 accounts! Usually all set to some sort of enormously cryptic strong passwords I always forget. If your not using excel services or crawling external content, you can usually thin it down 2 accounts. December 05 Ascertaining if "x" public site is running SharePointQuick and dirty method:
Append "_vti_bin/owssvr.dll" after the site:
Example:
This should return your standard SharePoint page if the site is indeed running on SharePoint.
Most folks don't go through the trouble of redirecting the old Vermeer shadow directories and/or disabling owssvr.dll (which would generally be considered bad for SharePoint..) You can get some info on the old Front Page extensions remnant here: http://www.synergyonline.com/blog/blog-moss/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=24
Stuff like this made SPS not-so-user-friendly back in 2001, but it is my trick of the day for confirming if a public website is running SharePoint.
( I also like when web admins on .NET boxes leave tracing on and you can use Trace.axd... but that's me.. )
-E- September 25 Using Team Foundation Server to Develop Custom SharePoint Products and Technologies ApplicationsThe first in a series of technical guidance on SharePoint and TFS has been published to MSDN. You can find it online now at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc948982.aspx Stay tuned for more! September 20 Zune Will Not Turn OnOK, strange occurrence this evening… which started as last evening’s adventure: Last night I updated my 80GB Zune 2.0 (I have a Special Edition Black & Stainless model I received from attending a Dynamics AX 5.0 Deep-Dive Airlift). I was able to download the new Vista 64-bit 3.0 software from www.zune.net, and install the new 3.0 firmware. I was pretty pysched because it has new social and gaming features, etc. Sweet.. So I let it charge up, downloaded some new music and tv videos, and was set to bring it to work this morning. (I was hitting the Park & Ride and it would give me something to do on the bus.) Well, my son beat me to it, and snagged the Zune on the way out to school, while I was in the shower. (Yeah, i was bummed, especially since he shouldn’t be bringing it to school!) I got home tonight, and found the Zune dead on the counter. Now, I figured he drained the battery down, and I plugged it into the USB cord, but nothing.. no charging indicator, and no matter how long I held buttons, it wouldn’t light up. A quick Live Search sent me to a KB article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944126 I followed the directions in the KB to press and hold the Back button Not sure what happened, but the battery was charged. I suspect the batt got weak and it went to sleep, and my plugging it in recharged it while it was in sleep mode, but I could be wrong. Anyhow.. I will monitor it for the next 24 hours and see what transpires. -E- August 30 Newly Revised SharePoint SDKs – Hot off the Presses(This is a trackback post from Randall’s blog : http://blogs.msdn.com/randalli/archive/2008/08/28/just-published-wss-and-moss-sdk-1-4-download-and-online-msdn-library-8-29-2008.aspx Thanks Randall!) Hello SharePoint Developers! We are excited to announce the availability of the latest updates to the online MSDN Library + the downloadable SDKs for both MOSS 2007 and WSS 3.0! In our never-ending efforts to improve the customer and partner experience, we are announcing the sim ship of both the online MSDN Library and the downloadable SDK! No more confusion about what’s the latest version: August is August! The August 2008 update is version 1.4 and reflects feature enhancements that were part of the recent Infrastructure Update. For more information on SharePoint Products and Technologies updates, you can start here on TechNet. Which SDK do I need to download? If you are only writing code that utilizes the Windows SharePoint Services platform, you can download the WSS SDK. However, if you want the superset of all documentation and samples, you should install the MOSS SDK, and then you’ll get all the platform and technology information as well. You don’t need to download both, but you will need to uninstall all previous versions. Note The SDK 1.4 downloads are full releases that include all previous tools and documentation. What’s New in this release? The SDK updates in 1.4 include:
· Updated documentation files, including updated, offline versions of MSDN Library Technical Articles and Developer Guides · Lots of new documentation for Records Management APIs. · Microsoft.Office.RecordsManagement.Holds · Microsoft.Office.RecordsManagement.InformationPolicy · Microsoft.Office.RecordsManagement.PolicyFeatures · Microsoft.Office.RecordsManagement.RecordsRepository · Microsoft.Office.RecordsManagement.Reporting · Microsoft.Office.RecordsManagement.SearchAndProcess While you’re updating your SharePoint development tools…You can also update the Visual Studio Extensions for SharePoint Services. Here is the link to the installer: VSeWSS 1.2. The extensions were updated on 7/1/2008 and now work with Visual Studio 2008! Don’t forget to download the user’s guide: version 1.1 August 28 Reflector :: Thanks Lutz!!!!I received a sad email yesterday, as did most .NET developers. Lutz decided finally after quite a few years and much negotiation to turn Reflector over to Red Gate. I also like RedGate's sql tools, and I hear they have excellent customer support, but it does make you wonder how the product will evolve and extend. Perhaps Lutz may consider a lead role with Red Gate as well. I for one would not have minded shelling out some cash to support Reflector and Lutz had it been asked, but I suppose the support for the tool and it's extensions can be overwhelming for a single person. The extensions themselves are powerful, and I hope those folks contributing continue to do so. One things for sure, Lutz will always be welcome at my doorstep. :)
After more than eight years of working on .NET Reflector, I have decided it is time to move on and explore some new opportunities. I have reached an agreement to have Red Gate Software continue the development of .NET Reflector. Red Gate has a lot of experience creating development tools for both .NET and SQL Server. They have the resources necessary to work on new features, and Reflector fits nicely with other .NET tools the company offers. Red Gate will continue to provide the free community version and is looking for your feedback and ideas for future versions. For news and updates on Reflector, sign up for the .NET Developer’s Newsletter from Red Gate. To find out more about the agreement, see the interview on Simple Talk. August 26 SharePoint and Hyper-V (Virtualization) SupportSharePoint Hyper-v/SVVP support preliminary guidance is now live, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc816955.aspx. Product Team Blog has also been posted, http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/archive/2008/08/18/update-on-virtualization-support-for-sharepoint-products-and-technologies.aspx Enjoy! August 09 Why do our customer's want our "skin" in the game? This has been the recurring theme for many new MCS staff.. Why would enterprise customers want to pay large hourly rates and travel expenses for us to come on-site? I finally realized it's not just our in-depth technical expertise and top-notch consulting skills (oh, and we write unbelievably great quality code too..) but it's what some of our customer's employees look like when they have hit a "dead-end". It must be the effect of doing too many Google searches seeking technical information that doesn’t help them anyhow. To see what I mean, I snapped a picture at a recent customer visit, of just one such "skilled information worker" (Sorry all you IW folks, no offense): So, as you can see, they undoubtedly fare better with our skin in the game! -E- April 20 World's Fastest Car...Bugatti Veyron
Hmmm.. somehow there's nothing that seems as poetic as blowing by a few Troopers and that guy who just passed you on the right a mile back at a cool 210. :) But then again.. I like freedom. ;) Quote YouTube - World's Fastest Car...Bugatti Veyron April 11 C# for Ancient C# DevelopersOK, It's true, I'm a dinosaur. Go ahead, blow the dust off of me. Now, I know what some of you are thinking.. what are these "basic questions"? Let me share a few (and help some of you get employed as software engineers). Now, if you're serious, I'm going to point you to some resources to make yourself "Great in 2008": What's LINQ? While you're at it, read some more of Scott Gu's Blog, leaf through the latest 3 issues of MSDN Magazine, and find out what PerformancePoint, SkyDrive, and ForeFront are. (You can even download free trials.) You'll be a better feeling person after all the Kool-Aid. Extra Credit Question:
Disclaimer March 19 Snipping Tool Rocks!I recently found the Snipping Tool in my Windows Ultimate. Pardon me for being a late-blooming Dork, but I always seem to CTRL+PrintScreen my desktop, then have to crop the heck out of it with the Picture Tools in Word/Outlook 2007. Pain in the rump for doing quick screen captures quickly. And usually when I want to annotate something quick, I have to fire up PaintShopPro, Paint, or SnagIt. "Kappoy gyud kaayo." (That's pretty tiring.) The Snipping Tool can even save the URI below the snip when grabbing a web page. Excellent. Try it out by going to your Start menu and start typing Snipp.. it should pop right up for you to select. Since I run dual-monitors (like most of the free-world coders out here), this saves a ton of clipboard memory too. Speaking of which, I noticed those two new boxes on all my desktop windows. The first spans the window across both screens, and the second quickly toggles the window to the "other" screen. (And I have been minimizing, dragging, dropping and maximizing.. shame on me..) I should know better, having seen some fo the multi-monitor stuff some researchers are working upon that will be the next best thing to sliced Tasty Bread and a Caramel Macchiatto. :) Keep it real! December 30 Celebrating...Well, Christmas has come and went, and now time for the New Year.
It has been an amazing few months. Not only did I attain MCPD (Microsoft Certified Professional Developer), but I also got my MSTS (Microsoft Certified Techincal Specialist) in SharePoint 2007, and the other day attained my MBSCP (Microsoft Business Solutions Certified Professional) in Dynamics CRM. I also attained the core MCP exam for SQL Server 2005, leaving me two exams left to attain MSITP-DBA (Microsoft Certified IT Professional - Database Administrator).
All this while meeting business commitments, consulting onsite full-time with my enterprise clients, dealing with my four lovely kids and stuff such as basketball games, soccer practices, cub scouts and a slew of parties. Plus my weekly league competitions (albeit I'm in 9th place overall right now.)
Such a deal. I'm proud of myself, thankful to my wife and family, and above all happy to have my relationship with Him on a steady course!
Bonuses have been a new vehicle, great new friends, a pretty nice place to live, and it just keep getting better.
2008 will be an even more amazing time for sure :) December 02 Issue installing Windows Server 2008 RC0I created a new VPC image in Virtual Server 2007 today, and created two virtual HD's for it.
(I like to put data on it's own volume from the base OS.)
I then proceeded to install Windows Server 2008 RC0 Enterprise Edition (Full not Core) and I hit a small roadblock:
After scratching my head as to why it said "This computer's hardware may not support booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the computer's BIOS menu." I tried to create new partition and format them on the two disks. Um, yeah, no: That didn't work.
I restarted the install and doubled-checked the Virtual PC's BIOS. It was set to boot from Floppy first, so I set that to HD0, and disabled the PXE boot as the fourth option, just to be safe. As it turns out, I must have clicked the prior screen's Custom button twice, since the install proceeded normally and I was good to go.
Ho-hum... now for Visual Studio 2008 Team Suite once I get through it all.
My goal is to get a 2008 VPC setup with SQL Server 2008 CTP5, 2008 VSTS, SharePoit Server 2007 and CRM 4.0 on it with all my dev stuff (ReSharper/Snippet Compiler/Reflector/etc.) to play with.
Wish me luck. :) November 22 Visual Studio 2008 Ships!!What else can I say? The big day has arrived (read the official word here on Soma's blog) and we're all very excited to let everyone know that all parts of the Visual Studio Team System 2008 product family are available today for download from MSDN. If you're not already a subscriber to MSDN, you can download a 90-day trial of Team Suite and TFS instead. We've been working on this release for the past two years so there's a whole lot of new features available, many of which we've talked about during the beta releases. Here's a quick run down of some of the key features in Team System this time around (drop me a note if I missed your favorites):
Many, many congratulations to all the people that worked so hard over the past couple of years on this release. And more importantly, many, many thanks to our customers for providing us feedback on Team System 2005 as well as pre-releases of Team System 2008. You help us do a better job! Please try it out and let us know how Visual Studio Team System 2008 works for you! Woohoo! October 30 BooWell, Its Halloween! HooRah. One of my favorite times of the year. The leaves are falling, the pumpkins beeing carved, little munchkins running about, and plenty of hot drinks (Coffee/AppleCider/Hot Chocolate/etc.)
Well, if you work for MSFT you will understand the plethora of acronyms herewith: I just attained my MCPD (so I'm MCP/MCAD/MCTS now too) and got off a successful CRM project with BECU. Did my QRP10 items, have a UBI of 104%, a CBI humming along, got to GIVE, and will be attending MSSU 13 this week. In the works are my SQL ITP cert exam studys, and I may do a ITAP in LA for Boeing soon. Status quo. Along with that I'm trying to digest Silverlight, Titan, Rosario and check out what's to come in Seven. Ah, the day never ends. And to think I want to become a MCA and MicroSpeak for the rest of my life. Go figure. Perhaps a MOSS site for acronyms and codenames is in order.
Luckily its my BDay soon too, and perhaps my wife will play nice with me. Enough rambling for now. I haven't been blogging much at all, and I should start posting some more relevant stuff soon. For now, enjoy the screams and check out some of the pics I posted in the 2007 Pics album.
Adios amigos! September 20 Internet SecurityI think everyone needs to stop by and pay homage to staysafe.org, and spread the word to your families about the site.
It's quite true that just about anyone can find info on folks (whether you like it or not) online, without too much of a struggle.
My wife and I have a very 'public attack profile' on the internet, having been a user of the digital superhighway since it's inception. Heck, I even helped (and continue to help) build the internet. (Its really true.)
Having said that, we owe it to our generations to follow to be sensible and proactive in threat assessment and protection. It starts NOW. (not tomorrow, not the day after, blah, blah, blah.)
I'm happy to have the opportunity to be able to go into the community and share the safety message this week (and perhaps thereafter more frequently), and my blog could possibly take a more informative direction for a wider audience in the future.
Till then for now.
-The English speaking Eric Golpe (as opposed to this one.) May 06 Town HallI wanted to pass along an interesting article I came across, from Frank Hilario, entitled "Yahoo Bites Microsoft, Or, The Secret of Google".
I am a firm believer in not believing everything I read, and also, expecting the unexpected.
(How to expect what you don't know about is all about risk mitigation baby.. your best defense is an impeccable offense.)
My take is, and I will quote a COO I recently ran into at a company 'Town Hall' meeting.. "Speculation is just that.. speculation!". Bravo. Well said. Maybe Yes, Maybe No (or as Russian's would say, "Maybe Yes, Maybe Snow...")
I for one have to say this: "I'm not going down like that!" and I'm pretty sure none of my colleagues are either. Frank's analogy for Willliam to align only with Bill is one the money. There is a limit to coopetition and you never know.. maybe Yahoo would be strategic. Maybe not. It depends on the allocentrism and direction. I think nobody is clear of the direction yet at any of these companies... How could you be in an evolving, ever-dynamic landscape we call the Net?? For certain, we employ some of the smartest talent in the world. We have some of the greatest products in the world running on over a billion (did you count that?) desktops every day. And a legacy that goes with it. And have we mentioned customer service? Relationships? Tools? Frameworks? Let's not lose track of the scope.. even internationally. (BTW, have you seen the recent IE/Firefox numbers?? )
Anyhow, back to work...
